How to actually find something to do in Kansas City this week

The city is never boring. Finding the good stuff just takes knowing where to look — and a little less doomscrolling.

The Stare

There is no shortage of things happening in Kansas City on any given week. The shortage is finding them before they’ve already happened. Here’s how to stop missing the good ones.

Start with the neighborhoods, not the calendar

Most event calendars are sorted by date, which is exactly backwards. What you actually want to know is where the night is good — and in KC that’s a neighborhood question. First Fridays in the Crossroads. Live jazz holding down 18th & Vine the way it has for a hundred years. The patios in Westport and the river market on a Saturday morning. Pick the district that fits your mood and the events sort themselves.

Follow the makers, not the venues

The best things in this city are thrown by people, not buildings. A potter’s kiln opening. A supper club in a space that’s a coffee shop by day. A bike night that exists entirely because three people kept showing up. Venues advertise; makers tell their friends. Get on the friend list.

Let the wire do the scanning

Half of “what’s going on” shows up in the news before it shows up on a ticket site — a festival lineup drop, a new restaurant’s soft open, a street closing for something fun. The Stare’s front-page wire pulls those headlines from every KC newsroom into one place, so a good weekend usually announces itself if you’re watching.

And then there’s the directory

This is the part we’re building next door. ks.city is becoming the living directory of what’s going on in Kansas City — the locally-owned spots, the makers, the recurring things worth your time, kept current instead of frozen on some page from 2019. The Stare tells you what happened today; ks.city is meant to tell you what to do with your Saturday.

Between the two, the goal is the same one this whole project keeps coming back to: pay attention to this city on purpose, and the city pays you back.
